This bank was 15,000m3 of fill from a roading project in a Tolaga Bay forest so barely any nutrients available from the soil which is why we used FLEXTERRA wood-fibre mulch.

When it rains, some moisture is retained in the soil on slopes, however a lot of water runs off the surface into drains etc, often taking soil with it, causing erosion.

Minimise this risk with Flexterras 1700% water holding capacity - thats 17 times its own weight! This reduces water run-off dramatically and also stores water for the grass seed to use when it needs it! 😍👍

Then we have what's called the Functional longevity of 18 months. This is the protection from wind, rain run-off etc. provided by the mulch until the seed has germinated. As well as protecting the seed, it also protects the bank from eroding away. So you're basically safe-guarded from erosion, the moment we apply the slurry.

Organic Mulch may make your Garden look tidy, but the work it does to improve growing conditions for your plants is what makes it most appealing.

In nature, the forest floor is covered by leaves, twigs, branches and decomposing material for majority of the year. With the help of animals, microbes and seasonal weather changes, these materials create a layer that protects the soil from erosion and weather extremes, suppresses weeds and also improves soil texture.

Spreading organic mulch in your garden is the best we can do to mimic this natural process.

Why Instant Green?

Not all mulch is good for your garden, some mulch has materials such as gravel, shells, volcanic rock, limestone and granite. Although these can be used as soil coverings, they do not hold moisture and do zilch to improve the soil.

The Do's and Don'ts

Do apply 7 - 13cm of mulch throughout the garden/planting bed, this will settle to a depth of 4.5 - 10 cm.

Don't apply mulch directly to the base of any plants, including trees and shrubs. This 'buries' part of the aboveground stem and can cause rotting and eventually the plant will die.

Do replenish mulch 1 - 2 times per year, or when there's 3cm or less of it. This is a rough guide however, this may vary depending on rainfall, sunshine hours, temperature, and the length of your growing season. To replenish simply add another layer to the existing mulch.

Do water your garden as per usual

Do pull out any weeds you see, although mulch suppresses weeds there are still some that come through. These are easy to pull out as they have established their root structure in the mulch.

For any lawn the no. 1 solution is Instant Lawn, however, Hydroseeding is the next best option, being cost effective and providing a lush green lawn.

HydroSeeding is a process of combining water, certified grass seed (of your choice), starter fertiliser and protective mulch together, which is then sprayed onto prepared soil.

This mulch mixture bonds the seed to the soil, preventing erosion from the windblown soil and light rain. The fertiliser and mulch mixture provides an ideal nurturing environment for seed germination to establish a lush dense, healthy lawn.

When watered correctly and in premium growing conditions, germination can be seen in 5 days, however the normal time span is 10-14 days.

Different seasons offer different advantages

Hydroseeding in the spring and early autumn requires less water than in the summer months, however seed germination is slower and there is a higher risk of excessive rainfall/flooding.

In the heat of the summer the seed will germinate and grow faster, although consistent irrigation is needed at the right times.

In the winter months we rarely do any hydroseeding, however we can do if need be, call or email us to discuss options.

The best time of the year to dry seed your lawn is in the autumn months.

Soil and air temperatures are high enough and consistent enough to encourage germination and continued new growth.

Less opposition from rogue summer grasses such as couch, paspalum etc.

As the autumn rolls through, the morning dews come through with it which also helps in germination and saving you water.

Key points to getting a strong germination strike rate is using one of our certified seed blends and applying it at the correct application rate for that seed blend.

6 Tips to ensure a lush lawn

1. Within 1/2 hour of installation soak your lawn with 2-3cm of water

2. Keep off the lawn for 2 weeks

3. Water 15 mins morning and night for 2 weeks.

4. After 2 weeks water every 2-3 days

5. After 6 weeks apply slow release fertilizer to maintain a green lush lawn.

6. If there are any signs of yellowing increase watering time.

Vary water depending on weather conditions (if it rains dont water)
