Markorori Beach Project
Project Overview
A large slip came down at Markorori Beach, blocking one lane on SH35.
Earthworks cleared the slip and shaped the batter.
Soil types onsite we're an assortment of highly erodible clays with very little organic matter. Cut and benched face with steep 50 to 60 degrees cuts between each bench, reaching 30 to 50 metres vertically up from the side road.
Scope
Instant Green was engaged to stabilise the steep batters and promote vegetation succession to ensure long-term slope integrity and prevent sediment movement into nearby coastal areas.
Our Solution
Soil Blanket
-
Application rate 3,000kg/ha. To provide the necessary nutrients for long-term vegetation succession.
Stabi-Mulch
-
With New Zealand wooden fibre and Site Loc Polymer. Application rate 2,500kg/ha. To provide stabilisation while the grass germinated and vegetation succession underway.
Seed blend used was our Erosion Control seed blend. Deep rooted species that thrive in poor quality soils. 12 months after application some species can have a root structure up to 30cm deep!
Challenges
Two cyclones and several intense 15mm/hour rain events occurred within the first four weeks after application, putting early vegetation and surface protection to the test.
Results
The site showed no signs of sediment movement, erosion, riling or anything. Instead, we had achieved nearly 100% grass strike and the slip was fully stabilised, vegetation succession underway!
